Learning Something New

I have to remind myself often that this is Christine’s first time at many things. At five years old, she is still very new to the world and all the things that come with being a human. These past few months have been filled with many new experiences that are filling us with joy. First time riding without training wheels, which turned quickly into her first big-girl bike and, to my surprise—first desert trail riding. Turns out she’s an adventurer! First boat ride, wedding, mailing a letter with the Pony Express, having a ‘big’ part in a play, and just this weekend–her first time replacing a window with Dad.
Of course, parenting is easy to do when we are excited to share new experiences with her. It’s a different story when you’re trying to help her develop a new skill and your patience begins to run thin. Learning to sound out words, remembering to turn off the lights, and putting your clothes in the laundry. When I’m tempted to get short or give up too early, I remind myself, “This is still new to her.” Grace upon grace. Patience upon more patience. More opportunities to grow and figure out this new skill. She’s brand new to this–perfection is not the goal.
When was the last time you stretched yourself by trying something new? What surprised you? What did you struggle with? Were you hesitant to even try?
Columbia scientists say that learning new things keeps your brain sharp, helps you adapt to change, and even acts as a stress reliever. New experiences stimulate the brain to release dopamine, which activates pleasure-and-reward pathways—improving mood and even your motivation.
It doesn’t need to be something huge or a long-standing project–it could be a simple new experience. Learning how to bake bread or taking a cooking class. Signing up for a class in something new from the library or local community center. Attending a social event at Pinnacle or giving ushering a try. Literally anything can be new! The amazing thing about living in the Phoenix Valley is that there are hundreds of new opportunities to be had (not to mention the tons of new things you can try here at Pinnacle!).
So this summer —take the five-year-old challenge. Challenge yourself to try something new. Put yourself in a position of learning and discomfort. Have patience with yourself and have fun!! I can’t wait to hear all the things you discover!
