Reading the Gospel of Luke with Time

with Dr. Eric Barreto
12 pm
  |  Fellowship Hall rm 2
Lunch followed by lecture

As the Gospel of Luke begins to weave a story about Jesus, there is a clock ticking in the background. As promises about Jesus’ resurrection and assurances of his return are narrated, what can we learn about the world God is shaping around us? So often, we are tempted to imagine Christian timekeeping as primarily about the end of the world as we know it. But what if Luke is more interested in our everyday practices of keeping time as we live and die, rejoice and grieve? In short, the Gospel of Luke helps us tell what time it is in a way that is meaningful and faithful, especially in a moment of intersecting crises. Join Dr. Eric Barreto, the Frederick & Margaret L. Weyerhaeuser Associate Professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary, for this special lecture for our Pinnacle community.

How to Read the Gospels

9 am  Chapel Library

Dr. Mike Hegeman will explore the origins and significance of the four narratives we know as Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. These gospels are full of history, healing stories, parables, and theological reflection. Through them, we meet Jesus the Messiah. These four accounts of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, which teach us so much about faithful living, require reading strategies to gain access to the kingdom of God that they portray. Join us to find out more about reading these biblical books with confidence and humility.

Wednesdays during Lent | Feb. 25 - Apr. 1

ENTERING THE DESERT
Wednesday, Feb. 25
Anthony the Great & Syncletica of Alexandria
Solitude, simplicity, and the search for God.

During Lent, we are invited to slow down, listen deeply, and rediscover what truly matters. Long before us, the Desert Fathers and Mothers retreated into the wilderness to do just that - to seek God in silence, simplicity, and prayer. Though they lived centuries ago, their insights into faith, humility, and inner peace continue to speak with striking relevance today.

Join us every Wednesday evening during Lent as we explore the spiritual wisdom of one Desert Father and one Desert Mother each week. Through brief readings, reflection, and conversation, we’ll consider how their voices can guide us through our own modern deserts - toward lives of greater compassion, patience, and trust in God. The class meets at 5 pm in the Chapel Library, followed by our Lenten Vespers service at 6 pm in the Chapel.

Wisdom of the Desert Fathers & Mothers

Wednesdays during Lent | through Apr. 1
Chapel Library

SOLITUDE AND CONTEMPLATION
Wednesday, Mar. 25
Macarius of Egypt & Euphrosyne of Alexandria
Deepening prayer and finding God in silence and stillness.

The End of the Christian Life: How Embracing Mortality
Frees Us to Live
by J. Todd Billings
Thursdays
| Feb. 26 - Mar. 26 | 8 - 9 am | Chapel Library & Online

In The End of the Christian Life, Todd Billings urges Christians to embrace our mortality in our daily life and faith. This is the journey of genuine discipleship: following the crucified and resurrected Lord in a world of distraction and false hopes. Drawing on his experience as a professor and father living with incurable cancer, Billings offers a personal yet deeply theological account of the gospel's expansive hope for small, mortal creatures. Join us for this Lenten book discussion with Pastor Erik. Books will be available in the Church Office and throughout the campus starting Feb. 1 for $10.

If you want to deeply connect your faith with your commitment to a more just and compassionate world, this book is for you.
