This past weekend, I was a bit under the weather with a sinus infection, so slowing down was in the cards for me.  I spent a lot of time watching the World Cup in the United States! It has been one of the most enjoyable experiences, and thinking back, I don't recall watching this event in the past. How did I miss this?

For a few weeks, the entire world seems to gather in one place, sharing excitement, pride, and unforgettable moments. Fans arrive from every corner of the globe, carrying their flags, traditions, songs, and hopes. Yet despite different languages and backgrounds, everyone understands the joy of one sport - soccer (or football, depending on where you're from). That common connection is just something special!

Sports have always had a unique ability to bring people together. They create friendships between strangers, spark conversations across cultures, and remind us that competition can be respectful and inspiring at the same time. When I watch supporters cheering side by side, I feel genuinely heart warmed. The passion in the stadiums, the emotion on the players’ faces, and the pride of representing a nation all combine to create something bigger than a game.

One of the most admirable traditions comes from Japan. Time and again, Japanese fans have brought their own trash bags and stayed behind after matches to help clean the stadium. It is a simple act, yet it sends a powerful message about respect. Respect for the game, respect for the players, respect for fellow spectators, and respect for the host community. News reports also highlighted the condition of the Japanese men’s team locker room after a match. It was left pristine, as though no one had been there at all. That level of care and consideration deserves recognition and appreciation.

There is an important lesson in those actions. Great sportsmanship is not only about winning or losing. It is also about how people treat one another, how they care for shared spaces, and how they represent themselves when the spotlight is on them. Japan’s example shows that small gestures can leave a lasting impression.

The World Cup is a celebration of competition, culture, and community. Seeing so many countries come together in the United States reminds us that we share more than we sometimes realize. What a joy!  Catch a game or two if you can!
